About Pindos National Park

Pindos National Park

Pindos National Park, established in 1973, is situated in the Epirus region of northwestern Greece and covers an area of approximately 66,000 acres (27,000 hectares). The park encompasses parts of the Pindus mountain range, characterized by soaring granite peaks, deep river gorges such as the Vikos Gorge, and lush mixed forests dominated by beech, fir, and black pine trees. The rugged landscape supports diverse flora and fauna, including rare species such as the Balkan chamois, brown bear, and golden eagle. The Vikos Gorge, one of the deepest in the world relative to its width, is a central landmark offering striking scenic views and challenging trekking opportunities. The Aoös River flows through the park, contributing to its varied ecosystems and supporting species like otters and freshwater fish. Historically, the region has long been inhabited by traditional mountain villages preserving ancient customs, architecture, and pastoral lifestyles. Visitors are drawn to the park for hiking along extensive trails, wildlife observation, and exploring cultural sites such as monasteries and stone bridges. The park provides options for day hikes, multi-day treks, and mountain biking, with trailheads accessible from nearby villages. Pindos National Park's combination of geological features, biological diversity, and cultural heritage makes it a significant protected area and one of Greece’s top outdoor destinations.
